COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus School District choirs are helping kids be better students, all while providing great entertainment.

Singing and dancing is a way of life for students in the Frontline Choir at Columbus High School.  Director Michael Jackson says the choir students he works with will be better off academically.

“This type of program is good to give kids an outlet besides academics but it also, as research has shown, shows that kids that participate in music programs are far better off and more likely to graduate and better in reading and math skills,” says Jackson.

Frontline Choir member Scylind McCloud says being in the choir has helped her social life as well.

“Well I actually started in Showtime and that was in 7th grade and I’ve been in it for like 4 years now.  I just really love to sing.  So when I heard about the group, I just got in it.  I made a lot of friends and I love my teacher so it’s really, really good,” says McCloud.

The Frontline Choir began in the early 1990s and the Middle School’s Showtime Choir was established in 2003.  Both choirs have performed all over the state in public and private venues.

The annual winter show will feature all of the District’s Choirs: the two middle school choirs, the Showtime Show Choir and Girls Choir and the Columbus High School Frontline Choir.  The Columbus High School Gospel Choir, which is a 70+ voice gospel choir, will also perform for the first time this year.

The Winter Concert will be held in the Columbus High School auditorium at 6pm on Thursday.

Admission for the concert is $5 for anyone 5 years and older.
