Man Charged In Bizarre Kidnapping Case

OXFORD, MS (WCBI) – Oxford Police have charged a Courtland man with Burglary and Kidnapping after a Sunday morning incident in the city.  Investigators say they were called to the corner or North Lamar and Jefferson by a citizen who sensed a woman was in trouble.

When patrolmen arrived, the woman ran to them and 37 year old Robert Fortner threw something at them and rushed the officers.  Tha’ts when they took Fortner to the ground and arrested him.  Investigators interviewed the woman who said it all started when she heard a noise in her back yard around 3:30 Sunday morning.  By the time she got out of bed Fortner had forced his way into her home. She was able to flee but the suspect ran her down. He said he owed somebody money and that he was going to take the victim with him to get it.  After he was taken into custody, Fortner could not remember breaking into the home or abducting the woman. In fact he told police he thought he was in Tupelo.  Investigators suspect drugs and alcohol played a role in the incident. Fortner is free on a 50 thousand dollar bond.
