Mantachie Seeks Water Rate Increase

MANTACHIE, Miss. (AP) — The city of Mantachie wants to raise water rates by $4 a month for about 120 water system customers who live outside the town limits.

The city hopes the new rates can be in place by the end of August.

Rod McFerrin, utilities manager for the town, tells a local newspaper 680 customers inside the town pay a monthly water bill that starts at a minimum of $17 for 2,000 gallons. Those outside the town pay $13 for up to 2,000 gallons.

The Mantachie’s board of aldermen can approved rates for city customers.

Raising rates for those outside the city fall under purview of the Mississippi Public Service Commission.

The PSC oversees customers outside the town because they don’t have a vote in Mantachie’s board of aldermen elections.
