MARIETTA, Miss. (WCBI) — There are many ways diabetes patients check their blood sugar, but what about some help from a four-legged friend?

One Mantachie family is raising money to bring home a certified alert dog for their son.

Eight year old, Logan Johnson checks his sugar levels every two hours to keep his type one diabetes in check.
“When I’m hot and it drops really fast I get a really bad migraine,” says Logan Johnson.

Logan was diagnosed with the disease two years ago.

His mother Christina Rausch says it was a battle from the start.

“We tried the CGM which is the continuous Glucose Monitoring and turns out he was allergic to the sensors and what that does it checks your sugar every minute ad gives you a five minute average and you know whether your sugar is going high or low,” says Christina Rausch.

But it was a Facebook message from a friend that gave the family hope.

Meet Alexis. She’s an alert dog who’s being trained in Washington state to notify Logan when his blood sugar gets too high or low.

Through fundraisers, the family was able to pay $7,500 to be her new owners.

However, they’re still raising funds for a flight that will unite Logan and Alexis. That’ll cost about $3,000.
“We’ve got to be able to take her places so that we can learn how to handle her in public see how she is going to act with Logan in Public and make sure she can alert in public,” says Rausch.

Logan says he can’t wait to bring his new best friend home.

“The waiting kind of like sad but when I get her I’m going to be like,” says Johnson.

Christina says the community has helped so much with their family. She only hopes through this, she will be able to do the same for another.
“Because I saw this with another family and I would like to help another family that needs this miracle and needs to see that actually works,” says Rausch.

In the near future, Logan will have his furry friend by his side alerting him and saving his life.
