MDOC Targets College Students for Jobs

JACKSON, Miss. (Press Release) — Are you a college student ready to jumpstart your career?

Students from universities and community colleges who are planning to pursue a career in corrections will be targeted during the Interview and Screening (I/S) Day to hire correctional officers for the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF) in Pearl and the South Mississippi Correctional Institution (SMCI) in Leakesville.

Interviews and screenings will be conducted on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. Starting pay for the Correctional Officer Trainee position is $1,833.80 per month.

Students can complete the interview and screening in one day, then complete the required training during the Christmas/Holiday break. Those students who are continuing their education can work and return to school without interruption to their educational schedule.

“We’ve adjusted our recruitment process to work with students who are committed to continuing their education,” said MDOC Commissioner Christopher Epps. “These are the type of high-caliber, goal-oriented persons we want to come work with us.”

Correctional Officer Trainees are responsible for the supervision, care, custody, and control of inmates in a correctional institution or facility. To become a correctional officer, an applicant must be 18 years of age, provide proof of a high school diploma or G.E.D., possess a valid driver’s license and Social Security card, and have no felony or domestic violence conviction. Males between the ages of 18-25 must show proof of selective service registration. Applicants also must complete a math quiz, a written report, a physical agility exercise and a drug test, at no cost to them.
