Michael Patilla to Present Solo Guitar Recital Thursday

STARKVILLE, Miss. (Press Release) — A Mississippi State music department faculty member presents a solo guitar recital Thursday, Aug. 28 at the Robert and Freda Harrison Auditorium in Giles Hall.

Free and open to the public, the 7:30 p.m. performance by associate professor Michael Patilla will feature five works by Spanish, Polish, Turkish, and Brazilian composers.

“I encourage all to attend the program, as it will feature music that is entertaining for both adults and children,” Patilla said.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, Patilla is a classical guitarist who serves as guitar program director for The MasterWorks Festival, an international performing arts festival held each summer in Winona Lake, Indiana.

Additionally, he has performed as concerto soloist with the Alabama Symphony, Eastman Chamber, MasterWorks Festival, Red Mountain Chamber and Starkville-MSU Symphony orchestras, as well as Orquesta Filarmónia de Honduras.

Patilla is a music graduate of University of Montevallo (Alabama) who went on to complete a doctorate in musical arts from the prestigious Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.

His selection as a 2007 Fulbright Scholar Award recipient led to a four-month appointment at the National Autonomous University Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where he worked as a guest lecturer in the university’s fine arts department.

Named to the Fulbright Senior Specialist Roster in 2011, Patilla also has taught and performed in England, France and Hong Kong.

“Septiembre,” Patilla’s debut CD featuring the works of South American composers, was released in 2005. His collection of new works by Honduran composers, “La Historia de Honduras,” also was published in 2012 by Imagine Music. For more, see www.michaelpatilla.com.
