COLUMBUS, Miss. — Mississippi University for Women student, Kristen Shreiner of Columbus, in 2015 will travel to 11 countries to empower orphans, as well as victims of sex trafficking.

A junior elementary education major, Shreiner will begin traveling in January with a 55-person squad that will break into seven teams in each country. The trip is being organized by Adventure Missions, an interdenominational missions organization that focuses on discipleship, prayer and relationships.

During the 11-month mission trip, Shreiner will travel to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Ireland, Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova. Shreiner is taking a year off from her studies and will return home in November.

Missions are nothing new to Shreiner, who grew up in Belgium, where she worked in an orphanage. She also has also traveled to Milwaukee to work with the homeless.

Shreiner said she isn’t nervous or worried about her time away, but looking forward to seeing a change in her perspective of life. She noted that she may stress about leaving her family when it comes close to the time of her departure.

“I’ve always been interested in missions. I like the adventure and the challenges that you face,” said Shreiner. “I am most excited about the opportunity to work the people in Asia, specifically the kids and the people affected by sex trafficking. I feel drawn to the kids.”

Shreiner mentioned that she first became aware of the opportunity from a friend who had previously been on a trip. After researching the different opportunities, she decided that she would go even if she didn’t know anyone else going.

While traveling Shreiner will be ministering to orphans, sex trafficking victims, residents of nursing homes and children of different countries.
