Mississippi Prepares Next Year’s Budget

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi’s top budget writers are deciding how much money the state will have available to spend in the coming year.

Gov. Phil Bryant meets Monday with the 14-member Joint Legislative Budget Committee.

They are analyzing economic trends to determine a revenue estimate. That is their best guess for how much the state might collect in taxes and fees during fiscal 2017, which begins July 1.

They are also discussing whether to revise the $6.3 billion revenue estimate for the current year.

Lawmakers held public hearings in September to start planning for fiscal 2017. They were asked to spend millions more dollars on education, Medicaid, mental health and other state services.
