Mississippi Professors Involved in Major Discovery

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) — Some professors from the University of Mississippi are making new waves on a major discovery.

It’s about gravitational waves.

Some scientists from Ole Miss’ Physics and Astronomy Department are part of the LIGO Project.

They’ve confirmed Albert Einstein’s belief from 100 years ago, that gravitational waves exist.

Scientists say this discovery is important, because it opens up a whole new field of astronomy.

“It’s the first time that we actually see two black holes in the sky, in the Cosmos, merging together, and forming a new black hole,” said Dr. Marco Cavaglia, UM professor/LIGO.

The researchers were able to detect gravitational waves billions of light years away, using a system that included mirrors stationed two miles apart from each other.
