Mississippi Women Face May 3 Deadline to Check Name on County Voter Polls

JACKSON, Miss. (Press Release) — Women have until May 3 to check that the name on their photo ID matches the name on county voter rolls to participate in the upcoming 2014 elections, members of the Mississippi Commission on the Status of Women said today.

The June 3 primaries will be the first time voters will need to show a photo identification card to cast a vote. Both the Republican and Democratic parties have primaries for the U.S. Senate and Congress.

“Women have about two weeks to make sure their ID card and voter registration card match,” said Rosalind Rawls, executive director of the Commission on the Status of Women. “Voter ID is part of Mississippi’s elections now. We don’t want any women to be surprised on Election Day when they learn the name on their ID card doesn’t match the rolls, and they can’t vote.”

Some women may use their married name on their government-issued ID but registered to vote under their maiden name or a former married name, Rawls said.
Women can go to their circuit clerk’s office to update their registration. The deadline to register to vote is noon May 3.

The Mississippi Commission on the Status of Women, created in 2001, works to influence policies that impact women, particularly in the areas of education, health care, economics, political participation and race relations.
