Mississippi’s Unemployment Rate Drops to 7.9 Percent in August

MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — Mississippi’s overall unemployment rate fell last month compared to July and August of last year.

But the employment picture continued to remain mixed in northeast Mississippi.

New preliminary state numbers put the seasonally adjusted jobless rate at 7.9 percent in August, down 8.6 percent the previous year. Across the region, Lafayette, Union and Alcorn counties had the lowest rates while Clay and Noxubee counties had the highest.

The number of residents working was up in eight area counties, but down in 15.
