COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -It was a great day to give back as Saturday marked the 3rd Annual Community Wide Martin Luther King Day of Service. Some volunteers that are grateful to be a part of the world wide cause.

“It feels great, any time you can help somebody makes you feel great,” said volunteer Howard Jenkins.

“I enjoy helping out as much as I can,” added volunteer Ilynda Hall.

The Martin Luther King Day of Service Community Volunteer Event took off running Saturday morning, as dozens of volunteers hit the streets to give back.

“They’re giving their time to help organize the store and it is one of the best gifts you can give to the Palmer Home,” said Store Owner Dennis Tedford.

The Palmer Home got a good sweeping as volunteers took to the racks, moved furniture, and helped arrange the store.

“Our job is to clean up the area here where the furniture is and rearrange it and get it where it’s easy and accessible kinda grouping everything together,” added volunteer Howard Jenkins.

Coordinator Melissa Duncan enjoys these types of events.

“Sometimes you don’t always feel like you’re making a difference when it’s just one person in one event, working with non-profit organizations has really made me realize that people like to get together and give,” said Melissa.

At Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen volunteers were getting their hands dirty, cleaning appliances and even painting.
For one young African American volunteer it really hit home and warms her heart.

“It makes me feel really good, you know to represent an do something like my past ancestors, they fought for all this so I would like to continue,” said volunteer Jasmine Becton.

For some MLK day is just another holiday to be celebrated, but for others it’s a day to get involved in community service and to honor a leader who left his mark.

The community service event was open for anyone who wanted to be a part of the cause.
