MONROE COUNTY, Miss. – (WCBI) The search for a Monroe County boy has a happy ending Wednesday evening.

9-year old Eli Moreland disappeared right after getting off the school bus, at a home on Donnie Carter Road outside of Smithville this afternoon. His backpack was found next to the mailbox.

Monroe County deputies were notified and began feverishly searching for Moreland.

He was found about a mile away from the home, in the woods. A neighbor spotted him, and called deputies.

Eli’s father is grateful for the search efforts and the safe return of his son.

“The numbers were growing by the minute as everything happened, everybody just pitching in. We had volunteers and everybody out here, God bless everybody that came out for my son and thank God he’s okay,” says Daniel Moreland, father.

“The community was in a panic but thank goodness everything is fine and the little boy is doing fine also,” adds Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.

Sheriff Cantrell also thanks the public for their assistance in this case.
