MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A new contract may be the answer to healthcare savings for inmates in Monroe County.

The Monroe County Board of Supervisors have approved a motion for Pioneer Community Hospital to prepare a contract regarding health coverage for prisoners. According to PCH the proposal would include hiring a registered nurse to be at the jail four hours a day five days a week. Pioneer Health Services would also require the county to pitch in $2,000 a month. Currently the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department only has a budget of $6,000 per year and if a new deal is reached more money will be needed. The savings would come in terms of transporting the inmates to clinics.

With a nurse on location much of that cost would be eliminated.
