MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Monroe County wants state and federal agencies to find the source of an oil slick in a major tributary to the Tenn-Tom Waterway.

County supervisors are expected to approve a letter Friday reporting the problem and seeking help from the Environmental Protection Agency, state Department of Environmental Quality and the state Oil and Gas Board.

County resident Murphy Evans provided pictures and video of the slick and tar balls this week and county attorney John Creekmore drafted the letter.

The oil is in James Creek near Highway 8 on the western edge of Aberdeen.

Evans has expressed concerns about ground water safety for years on or near his property and fears the oil may be coming from a nearby oil and gas fracking operation.
