Video: More Than 50 Pounds of Drugs Turned In

[jwplatform pnyVQTo1]TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Expired or unwanted prescription or over the counter drugs could be disposed of safely today at the Lee County Sheriff’s Department.

This is the second year the Lee County Sheriff’s Department has sponsored a drug drop off day. Residents could come in and leave medications they no longer needed in the front lobby of the sheriff’s office.

The medications are turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency for disposal.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson says the campaign takes potentially dangerous drugs off the streets.

“The success behind it is, one of the biggest problems we have now is prescription drugs, they are in every household, they’re easily accessible, if they get in the wrong hands you have serious problems so you need to take an inventory a couple of times a year of unused drugs and that’s the whole purpose of this,” Johnson said.

Experts say unused drugs and drugs lying around the home are one of the biggest single sources behind the prescription drug epidemic plaguing the country.

Sheriff Johnson points out that people can bring unwanted or expired medications to his office anytime for disposal.

Also, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department is being considered for a kiosk where people can dispose of prescriptions around the clock.

More than 50 pounds of drugs were taken in today.

Other “Drug Drop Off” programs are set Saturday from 10-2 at the Crosstown CVS Pharmacy in Tupelo, the CVS Pharmacy in Booneville, the Fulton Walmart, and the Union, Monroe and Calhoun County sheriff’s departments.
