COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -The Mississippi Theatre Association’s Annual Festival and Convention is in Columbus. Some of the brightest imaginations from across Mississippi are in town.

Mississippi University for Women is center stage for the 2013 Mississippi Theatre Association’s Annual Festival and Convention. More than 500 people, including high school students, teachers, college students and community participants from around the state are performing one act productions.

Actor Ian Garner says, “I’ve always really enjoyed theatre and the idea of acting ever since I was four years old. I watched Disney films and I thought I would love to do that, so this is a dream come true for me.”

MUW and Cook Elementary are hosting the four day festival. It’s also a great opportunity for highschool students to earn college scholarships.

Daisha Walker with the Mississippi Theatre Association says, “We also have the community festival that’s going on and then we have the theatre for young people, the ten minute play and the writing festival.”

At the high school, or secondary, festival judges will decide on a single high school team to move on to the South Eastern Conference Theatre Festival, later this year. Each production brings a little something different to the stage.

Cook Elementary student Jada DelGatto says, “Some of them are just pure fantasy and fun. Some are educational and sometimes they do Shakespere or something like that, especially if they are working with young people. It’s really fun and I think it’s super funny. The first one was really funny. To get to see performers like that make me feel confident that I want to be an actress.”

And touching others is what the festival is all about.

Ian says, “The smile on all those little faces knowing you made someone feel better.”

The public is welcomed. If you are interested in catching one of these productions, tickets are on sale at Whitfield Hall on the MUW campus Friday and Saturday.
