Video: MSMS Cracks Nation’s Top 60 in Magazine Ranking

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science has just earned some more bragging rights.

For the third year in a row, the school has been named one of the best high schools in the nation. MSMS was ranked No. 57 out of 5,500 schools surveyed by Newsweek and the Daily Beast publications.

The school’s ranking jumped an impressive 300 spots from last year’s ranking.

MSMS Director Germain McConnell credits unique teaching practices for the school’s success.

“Our mission is to enhance the future of Mississippi basically by providing innovative learning experiences,” McConnell said.

“It’s super exciting knowing that I was apart of that contributing factor to higher that score,” MSMS student Emoree Heiselt said. “It makes me really proud to be at MSMS.”

Not only was MSMS named one of America’s top schools, but it was also ranked in the top 25 high schools in the south.


 

COLUMBUS, Miss. (Press Release) — For the third year in a row The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science has been named one of the best high schools in America.

Out of 5,500 schools surveyed by national publications Newsweek and The Daily Beast, MSMS ranked number 57. Last year the school was ranked at number 352.

“Since the 2013-2014 school year aimed at breaking into the top 100, I’m thrilled we got it done in one year,” said MSMS Executive Director Dr. Germain McConnell. “This is a testament to the incredible faculty, staff, and student population here at MSMS.”

Not only was MSMS named as one of the nation’s top 100 high schools, but it was also singled out as among the top 25 high schools in the South.

“I can’t get over the fact that we jumped nearly 300 spots in the rankings,” said MSMS Admissions Counselor Wade Leonard. “The entire state of Mississippi should be very proud today.”

MSMS is Mississippi’s only public, residential high school for the state’s most academically talented students. The school, which was founded in 1987, is located in Columbus, Miss. on the campus of the Mississippi University for Women. The school serves high school juniors and seniors from every corner of the state of Mississippi. Students who wish to attend MSMS must apply during their sophomore years of high school.

“I can’t stress enough that MSMS is an option for every bright student in the state, and that we are a public school,” said Leonard. “One of the best high schools in America belongs to you regardless of whether you live in Pelahatchie or Ocean Springs or Olive Branch or Natchez or anywhere in between.”
