MSU Alumni Association Grows Again

STARKVILLE, Miss.–For the fifth consecutive year, the Mississippi State University Alumni Association set a record for active membership.

During 2012, the organization welcomed 43,568 members as it again exceeded a membership goal.

Association membership is based on financial contributions to the university, with gifts or pledges in any amount to the MSU Foundation or Bulldog Club qualifying a person for active membership.

“Our alumni and friends are very loyal and passionate, and year after year they continue to support the university, its students, faculty, staff and programs,” said Jimmy Abraham, associate vice president for development and alumni and executive director of the Alumni Association.

In line with a rise in alumni membership, the university also celebrated an increase in private support in recent years, with more than $60 million in private gifts received over the past four consecutive years. In addition, the giving rate by graduates rose from 14.7 percent in fiscal year 2009 to 18.1 percent in 2012.

In addition to individual members, the association also expanded its total number of chartered chapters. Last February, a new chapter in Tuscaloosa, Ala., brought the total number to 92 United States groups and one in South Korea.

This year, chapters in Orlando, Fla., and St. Louis, Mo., will be joining.

“Active members not only provide critical financial support to MSU, but they also volunteer their time in our many alumni chapters,” Abraham said. “Our more than 124,000 alumni worldwide are literally Mississippi State’s voice around the world.”
