MSU Fraternities, Sororities Seek to Build Habitat for Humanity Home

STARKVILLE, Miss. (Press Release) — Mississippi State’s Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is announcing plans to fund and build a Habitat for Humanity home for a Starkville family.

University fraternity and sorority members will begin the fundraising campaign Aug. 20 for the first of what is planned to be an ongoing construction effort.

John Michael VanHorn, assistant director for fraternity and sorority life, said his office is planning for the Greek-organization project to become an annual activity.

Habitat for Humanity homes in Starkville typically cost $82,000 to construct, and Greek members will launch a letter-writing campaign during the fall semester to seek donations, he added.

If everything goes as planned, construction of the home will begin in January, with dedication of the residence taking place in April during Mississippi State’s 2015 Greek Week.

Funding for the inaugural project must be raised by Nov. 15 in order to fulfill the timeline, VanHorn emphasized.

“A cornerstone of Greek organizations is serving others,” VanHorn said. “This is a great opportunity for fraternity and sorority members to make a special and unique impact on a Starkville family and the entire community.”

As part of its Maroon Edition first-year reading experience, MSU also has worked for the past five years with Starkville Habitat for Humanity to provide a new home for a family in need.
