MSU Partnership Could Benefit Local Manufacturers

GOLDEN TRIANGLE, Miss. (WCBI) – A new research partnership will help a major Lowndes County industry and open new opportunities for students.

Severstal North America and the university are opening a 4 thousand square foot research center to develop new steel products and technologies that will better serve customers and increase efficiency. The center will operate under the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems and include actual steel-making tools, including a melting furnace and a rolling mill. Director Roger King says the Steel Research Center could help car manufacturers in the area.

“We could possibly learn how to make products that have different strength characteristics along different areas of the beam so that part of that would be crush zone for the automobile but another part of it would be the crew compartment that would protect us if we were in an accident,” says King.
