MSU Students Earn “Scholars” Designation

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Nineteen Mississippi State seniors are new members of the university’s prestigious Society of Scholars in the Arts and Sciences.

The honor organization recognizes top university students each semester from all majors who have demonstrated the highest standard of academic excellence, and who also have pursued a broad exposure to courses in the arts, sciences and humanities.

Persons selected for the rigorous screening process must have demonstrated a sound foundation in languages, mathematics, sciences, oral and written communication, humanities, and social sciences.

In addition to Mississippi, the 2014 spring scholars’ class represents the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Tennessee. They include (by hometown):

BILOXI–Jacob T. Skrmetti, a psychology major and the son of John Skrmetti and Lehwmon Ross.

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. –Mary J. Pakkala, a chemistry/pre-pharmacy major and the daughter of Richard and Edna Pakkala.

CONEHATTA–Emily Graham Warren, a secondary education/foreign language education major and the daughter of Mitchell and Anita Graham.

ETHEL–Savannah J. Welch, a criminology major and the daughter of Kim Pace.

GREENWOOD–Kathryn A. Lucas, a microbiology major and the daughter of John and Marsha Lucas.

HERNANDO–Rachel M. Cox, a biological sciences major and the daughter of David and Patricia Cox.

JACKSON–Lauretta J. Gorman, a mathematics major and the daughter of Douglas and Diana Gorman.

LAKELAND, Fla.–Mark P. Young, a communication/broadcasting major and the son of Philip and Janet Young.

MADISON–Landen M. Tharp, a microbiology major and the son of Robert and Pamela Tharp.

MANDEVILLE, La. –Sasha A. Steinberg, a communication/journalism major and the daughter of Jon and Marlene Steinberg.

MARIETTA–Bree A. Harris, a biological sciences/pre-medicine major and the daughter of William Harris and Pam Harris.

MERIDIAN–Marisa B. Potate, a psychology major and the daughter of Michael and Teresa Potate.

PONTOTOC–Kaleb D. Kennedy, a biological sciences major and the son of Phillip and Angela Kennedy.

RIDGELAND–William S. Kettleman, a biological sciences/pre-veterinary medicine major and the son of Jimmy and Cynthia Kettleman.

SOUTHAVEN–William D. Buchanan, a chemistry major and the son of Brian and Susan Buchanan.

TONEY, Ala.–Rebecca M. Cash, a history major and the daughter of Brandon and Amy Cash.

VICKSBURG–Diana L. Hubis, a physics major and the daughter of Jeffrey and Susan Hubis.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga.–Stephanie C. Sorrell, a medical technology major and the daughter of David and Janet Sorrell.
