MSU Students Win Art Awards

Mississippi State art majors hold nine of 15 top honors given during the 2014 Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition.

Students at the university recently received two of three awards given for overall excellence. They include (by hometown):

CLINTON–Senior Whitten Sabbatini, son of William and Neva Sabbatini, for a photograph titled “Josh & Jevon;”

LOUISVILLE–Senior Carrie M. Shannon, daughter of Arnold and Lisa Strait, for a photograph titled “South Post Office 1.”

Also, among 11 judging categories, seven superior achievement awards went to MSU students, including:

BATON ROUGE, La.–Senior Kaitlin C. Mullins, daughter of Marvin Mullins of Baton Rouge and Claire Williamson of Natchez, Miss., for printmaking;

BRANDON–Senior Vernon E. McCoy, son of Vernon McCoy and Helen Christon, for drawing;

ESTILL SPRINGS, Tenn.–Junior Molly M. Howell, daughter of Kendall and Winifred Howell, for sculpture;

MADISON–Senior Andrew Yerger, son of John and Tina Yerger, for photography;

NATCHEZ–(See Baton Rouge, La.)

NASHVILLE, Tenn.–Senior Danae L. Carlson, daughter of Perry and Andrea Carlson, for clay arts;

OCEAN SPRINGS–Dominique J. Belcher, son of Tommy and Amy Belcher, for mixed media; and Charley R. Walker, daughter of David and Stephanie Walker, for computer imagery. Both are seniors.

A part of the College of Architecture, Art and Design, MSU’s art department offers seven academic emphasis areas, including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
