MUW Again Ranks High in U.S. News Report

COLUMBUS, Miss. — Once again, Mississippi University for Women has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 20 public Southern regional universities.

According to rankings released today [Sept. 9], The W was listed 18th among the public Southern regional institutions, moving up from No. 20 last year, and is the only institution in the top 50 ranked with an in-state tuition of less than $6,000. The W also was recognized as an institution with a low amount of student debt, ranking eighth among Southern regional public universities for least debt.

“Providing a high-quality, affordable education is an institutional priority for our university, and we’re especially proud of this particular ranking,” said MUW President Jim Borsig. “It is important for universities to retain and graduate students with the least debt necessary.”

The W also was named 14th among regional institutions for being veteran-friendly and fourth among the public institutions on that list.

According to U.S. News & World Report’s website, it cannot measure the various factors that make up the college experience. “But for families concerned with finding the best academic value for their money, the U.S. News Best Colleges ranking provide an excellent starting point for the search.”

The methodology focuses on quantitative measures “that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality, and it’s based on our researched view of what matters in education.”

Some of those ranking model indicators include graduation rate performance, undergraduate academic reputation, retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduate rate performance and alumni giving rate.
