MUW Art Professor Selected For National “PINK!” Exhibition

COLUMBUS, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) – With a focus on the color pink, artwork by a professor at Mississippi University for Women has been chosen for a national juried exhibition.

Appropriately titled of “PINK!,” the national exhibition explores the meanings, emotions and cultural implications associated with the color pink.

“I decided to illustrate the emotional effects. In my research, I found that pink is often thought of as a comforting color,” said Jonathan Cumberland, associate professor of graphic design.

“My illustration communicates how pink can make someone feel at ease by imposing the pink in the background into the foreground with a silhouette of pink hands over the woman’s shoulders giving her a massage.”

“Pink Massage” will be on display in the Slipe Gallery located on the campus of the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Conn., from March 7-26.

“Not only do I enjoy entering into themed exhibitions but I also have great respect for the juror, Kate Bingaman-Burt,” added Cumberland. “It gives me affirmation to have my work on display but it has always been my creative process that keeps me going.”

Cumberland holds a bachelor of fine arts in graphic design from The W and earned his master of fine arts from Savannah College of Art Design.

He has been at The W for three years and is currently teaching computers in art and web design.
