COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — 3,500 cookies and 1,200 cupcakes – all baked by MUW’s culinary arts students.

“In addition to that we’ll also be serving cotton candy and there’s also 100 gallons of wassail,” said culinary arts student Jasmine Geronimo.

For the advanced baking class, planning, prepping and baking all these sweet treats is part of their final project.

The class also designs the show piece, and this year it’s an elaborate cupcake stand.

“Every year at Wassail Fest we get to come up with our show piece and it’s exciting, months of research and what we’re going to do,” said Chef Instructor Mary Helen Hawkins.

For these students, this process prepares them for a future career.

“And I really want to work at a bakery someday. So working in the bake shop is like my home. So doing these cupcakes and all the cookies is just really what I enjoy doing,” said Geronimo.

“For students like me who want to go into event planning and things like this, it’s a great opportunity. Its kind of like our final, more practical. So we’re taking what we’ve learned through the whole semester and we’re applying the skills, recipie conversion and multiplication and all the stuff that goes into real world events. And we get to actually try it out here and it’s a really cool process,” said culinary arts student Kate Herndon.

Chef Instructor Hawkins says its rewarding to see her students putting their skills to the test.

“So we’re learning what do you do? and how you make things work, so I think it’s great experience for them,” added Hawkins.
