Video: MUW Nursing Student Inspired By Tragic Accident

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A nursing student at Mississippi University for Women recently received a big honor.

Heather McMillan was named Overall Outstanding student by the Mississippi Organization of Associate Degree Nurses.

McMillan says she has always had a heart for helping others and had considered the healthcare field as a career. She was inspired to pursue nursing in 2008 after she and three friends were involved in a devastating car crash.

She says when EMT’s got her to the hospital. Her injuries included a broken leg, broken ribs, and a lacerated liver. Both of her lungs were also collapsed

After months of treatment and therapy, she was finally strong enough to go back to her job at a hospital and decided to apply to nursing school.

McMillian is preparing now to graduate from MUW’s nursing school. She has a 3.33 GPA.

She hopes to one day have the opportunity to teach nursing.
