COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Hundreds of MUW students take a big step in their nursing school careers.

Mississippi University for Women held its first white coat ceremony for its college of nursing, Monday afternoon.

It involved about 270 Associate’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students, who pledged to provide the highest quality of care and services in the medical profession.

They tell WCBI it’s an honor.

“I love the idea of dong a white coat ceremony, recognizing that nursing is a professional career, and we would like to emphasize the professionalism in nursing, and just be recognized, and it is a great opportunity, and I am honored to be in it,” said nursing student Racolesha Benson.

School officials say the ceremony is usually held for entering nursing students.

Mary Ellen Sumrall – the chief nursing officer at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle – spoke at Monday’s event.
