VERNON, Ala. (WCBI) — West Alabama Amateur Radio Club joined the rest of the world Saturday in the National Field Day.

The competition allows West Alabama and other radio clubs to test their equipment which is used in emergency situations.

Stations run off of gas generators including one running completely on a 120 watt solar panel.

Club President, Allen Chandler says these services have helped West Alabama residents before.

“When Hackleburg and Phil Campbell was blown away they had no contact and the first contact with the state MA officer came from this truck behind me so it was very important making contact with state,” says Allen Chandler.

The competition also includes communicating through Morse code.
