WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – The National West Point Alumni, Inc. 19th annual Martin Luther King Black Tie Banquet was held in West Point on Friday night.

Residents flocked to the UFCW Union Hall to give tribute to King’s legacy during the community wide event. The theme of the banquet was “The Dream: A Recipe For Success.”

Dr. Velmalia Matthews-Smith was the keynote speaker.

The banquet is also a fundraiser to provide scholarships to assist with college expenses for high school seniors.

Last year’s event brought in about $6,000.

“We’re very excited that this gives them an opportunity to go to school. It’s not going to pay for all of their college tuition, but it’s a start,” said NWPA spokesperson Bettye Swift.

The National West Point Alumni, Inc organization has chapters in West Point, Chicago, St. Louis, and San Diego.
