PONTOTOC, Miss. — Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley, Pontotoc Mayor Jeff Stafford and officials with Atmos Energy Corporation have announced an agreement to bring natural gas service to 113 customers in the Furrs Community of Pontotoc County.

At the urging of Commissioner Presley, Atmos Energy has transferred its franchise territory in certain parts of the Furrs community over to the City of Pontotoc for natural gas service. The major impacted areas that will be affected are along Furrs Road with some adjoining county roads up to the Longview Community. Atmos will also extend its facilities to 14 customers south of Highway 6 for natural gas service, a previously unserved area also.

“I commend Atmos Energy for working with me and the City of Pontotoc to make this happen. It is my goal to get natural gas service to as many Mississippians as possible and today we are making a great move in that direction in Pontotoc County.” Presley said. “Folks in rural communities like Furrs deserve the same energy options as people living in big cities.”

“Atmos Energy is happy to work with Commissioner Presley and the City of Pontotoc in a way that will bring natural gas service to this area,” said Michelle Whittle, Operations Manager for Atmos Energy in northeast Mississippi.

“We are proud to expand our city’s gas system to Furrs and add new customers. The City of Pontotoc is anxious and excited to get started on this project.”, said Pontotoc Mayor Jeff Stafford.

Construction on the project by the City of Pontotoc is expected to begin by early summer of 2015. Atmos Energy estimates it will begin work to bring gas to the 14 customers south of Highway 6 March 1, 2015.
