New Albany Hospital Expansion Okayed

NEW ALBANY, Miss. (AP) – Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County has been given state approval to triple the capacity of its emergency room in New Albany.

The Mississippi State Department of Health issued a certificate of need for the project this week. Mississippi requires a CON in a process designed to avoid duplication of health care services and control costs.

Hospital officials plan a $12 million, 20,000-square-foot extension on the south side of the hospital. It will have 22 patient examination rooms compared to the existing seven rooms. There also will be a new ambulance bay and improved work stations and support area for staff.

Baptist officials say the hospital expects 25,000 emergency room visits this year. They say the number of patients grows about 7 percent to 10 percent a year.
