COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus city leaders asked the community for patience and unity, as a few new details were released about the deadly Friday night officer involved shooting.

Columbus Police Chief Tony Carleton says there was a struggle during the incident.

Carleton was joined by Columbus Mayor Robert Smith at a Monday morning news conference.

Smith says members of the police department’s special operations group tried to stop a vehicle on 14th Street and 21st Avenue North.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says Ricky Ball was a passenger in the car. He ran from the vehicle and was chased by officers.

Now, investigators are trying to determine what happened between the time Ball was chased and when he was shot.

MBI is not releasing whether Ball had a weapon or drugs. The agency is also not saying if an officer used a taser.

Multiple people are being interviewed.

Three unidentified officers are on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure.

Columbus police are not releasing whether the female driver of the vehicle is being charged or being cited for a traffic violation.

Preliminary autopsy results are expected to be released this week.

A CPD internal investigation will be done once MBI’s investigation is complete.

The findings will be turned over to the district attorney’s office.

Councilmen Marty Turner, Gene Taylor, and Kabir Karriem, City Attorney Jeff Turnage, and Chief Operation Officer David Armstrong also attended the news conference.
