COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A new proposed law will help protect Mississippi drivers.

HB 1366 passed the house Wednesday allowing drivers who have a suspended license from a DUI to drive again, If they put a ignition interlock breathalyzer in their vehicle.

“You put the interlock device on it, instead of your license being suspended for 90 days, we will let you start driving before the 90 days,” says Representative Gary Chism.

That way less people may get behind the wheel illegally.

“Everybody makes mistakes. The interlock allows you to continue your day to day runs, activities, whatever it may be, you just have a couple more steps that you’ve got to do,” says Trooper Greg Bell.

Another part of the law takes care of a house keeping issue, making sure the state is aware of repeat offenders, an issues that wasn’t always being reportedly correctly.

“The clerk shall report this so that we will know this is more than your first,” says Rep. Chism.

Trooper Bell says every car the driver could use will be required to have an interlock system. That should prevent a drunk driver from taking a spouses car instead.

If passed, the law will take affect October 1st.
