PONTOTOC COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — New storm shelters are coming to Pontotoc County.

FEMA has approved almost $4 million to build them at the North Pontotoc and South Pontotoc campuses.

The shelters will only cost the county school district 10 percent of the total amount.

Officials say the shelters will be similar to the one in Smithville and can be used for gyms and other activities, freeing up other space for additional classrooms.

They will be able to hold more than 1,800 people.

The Pontotoc County school district hopes to start work by this spring.
