New Water Valley Alderman Steps Aside

Hawkins

WATER VALLEY, Miss. (WCBI) — A potential conflict with his full-time job forces a newly elected Water Valley alderman to vacate his position before ever taking office.

Ward 2 Alderman Ray Hawkins stepped aside this week before the aldermen and mayor took office Tuesday morning.

Hawkins defeated incumbent Fred White in the city’s May primary and then discovered serving as an alderman could force him out of his job as as assistant police chief for the University of Mississippi Police Department.

The new board of aldermen will have to appoint someone to temporarily hold the office and set a special election in August to fill the seat. Hawkins told the North Mississippi Herald his wife, Kathleen, plans to run.
