BOONEVILLE, Miss. — Northeast Mississippi Community College sophomore Practical Nursing Education student Shanalyn Graycloud of Walnut was the first recipient of the Jane Williams Excellence in Nursing Memorial Award when the honor was handed out at the college’s Practical Nursing Education pinning ceremony on Friday, August 1.

After Williams’ passing in 2012, the Practical Nursing Education (PNE) faculty established the memorial certificate for a student who best demonstrates the professionalism and integrity that Williams embodied throughout her 39-year teaching career at Northeast from 1969-2008.

Williams was instrumental in establishing the high standards that have contributed to the success of the college’s PNE program.

Using established criteria as a basis for selection, Northeast’s PNE faculty will nominate and choose a student each year that has portrayed all the characteristics of a professional nurse and of whom, Williams would have given her ‘stamp of approval.’ In event of a tie between nominees, the student’s grade point average will be the determining factor for selection.

In addition to Williams’ family, who was on hand to help present the award, former Practical Nursing Education instructor Carol Ivy officially presented Graycloud with the award. Ivy and Williams taught together in the college’s Practical Nursing Education program for 30 years.
