Northeast Mississippi Community College honored students for their academic achievements in the area of math and science during the tenth annual Honors Day Ceremony held at NMCC on May 1. Joining Northeast President Johnny Allen, Ed.D. (left) are Cody Coleman of Mantachie, Phillip Bentley Mauney of Ripley, Lucas Vandiver of Glen, Marcus Shallock of Blue Springs, Aleksander Sina of Blue Springs and Mathematics and Science Division representative George Nock. Schallock received the newly-founded Mathematics and Science Division All-Star Award. Mauney, Coleman and Vandiver all received the division’s Award for Excellence while Sina was named the Math and Science Division’s Most Outstanding Student.

BOONEVILLE, Miss. (Press Release) — Four Northeast Mississippi Community College students were honored for their academic achievements in the area of math and science during the tenth annual Honors Day Ceremony held at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

Math and Science Division representative George Nock presented Phillip Bentley Mauney of Ripley, Cody Coleman of Mantachie and Lucas Vandiver of Glen with the division’s Award of Excellence.

Aleksander Sina of Blue Springs was named the Math and Science Division’s most outstanding student.

In addition to the division’s most outstanding student and awards of excellence, Nock also announced the creation of a new award for the mathematics and science division – the Math & Science Division All-Star Award – which was given to Marcus Schallock of Blue Springs.

Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Honors Day Ceremony was held in the Bonner Arnold Coliseum on Thursday, May 1 and was sponsored by the Iota Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, plus Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. Nearly 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 131,000 students inducted annually. Phi Theta Kappa seeks to foster the development of leadership and service, to provide an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas, and to encourage the establishment of scholarships for advanced education.

Northeast’s Iota Zeta chapter has been recognized as a “Five Star” chapter for 12 straight years, the highest rating given any chapter, and has been recognized as an exemplary model. Advisors for the chapter during the 2013-14 academic year are Dr. Ray Harris, Andrea Mathis of Booneville, Dr. Deborah Kehoe of Oxford and Carla Falkner of Tupelo.
