OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – The start of a new school year is only three weeks away. One Oktibbeha County church wants to make sure kids start the year on the right foot. Saturday, they gave back to families in need through a clothes and food ministry.

LouDoris Gardner brought her three grandchildren to Rock Hill United Methodist Church to shop for back to school clothes.

It’s part of the church’s clothing ministry that’s opened three times a week, giving to families in need.

Gardner says she hopes her grandchildren will learn a valuable lesson.

“To let them know there are people in this world and in this town that care enough to do for people because these are the things we are trying to teach them, which is Christian values and this is what the community has is Christian values and they’re sharing the values with their neighborhood and their town,” said Gardner.

The church started the ministry in 2009 and organizers say the outreach grows every year.

Donna Poe is the chairperson for the clothes ministry and food pantry.

She says the ministry is meeting a great need.

“Some people need and some people have and they don’t have. And it’s just a help, we’re just here to help out with what they cant afford to do, everything we do here is free and also with the food pantry. Whenever they need something, we try our best to provide for them,” said Poe.

The ministry is not only a blessing to those receiving,

“Give thanks to God for having people like this Rock Hill Community and around here in Starkville , just give God thanks,” added Gardner.

But also to those who give,

“I enjoy doing this. You can say its one of my babies to be able to help somebody that’s in need and it doesn’t matter what time of day or night if they give me a call, I will be here,” said Poe.

The program depends on donations for the clothes and food ministry, for more information contact Donna Poe at 662-312-2935
