Oxford Newspaper Icon Passes Away

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) – Jesse Pittman Phillips, a former owner and publisher of The Oxford Eagle, has died. He was 84.

Phillips died at his home Sunday after a lengthy illness, the newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/1WSoO8J).

He was one of the owners of the paper for 53 years and served as publisher until 2005. Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson called Phillips an icon of the community.

The paper was sold to Boone Newspapers Inc. in 2014 and Phillips’ son Tim now serves as publisher.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Oxford.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the church’s atrium prior to the service.
