OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI)- It was a winter wonderland in Oxford on Friday.

The snow caused schools to close and even some businesses as well.

However, people were still out and about enjoying the rare snow day.

For some, having a snow day means one thing.

“No homework,” Oxford resident Lilly Roberson said.

The winter weather cancelled school and students took full advantage.

“I went sledding, snowball fights, hide and seek, and bunch of that stuff,” Oxford resident Jack Dye said.

But some people wanted to spend their snow day inside getting a nice hot meal

“I got up this morning, and drove 26  miles here,” Batesville resident Lee Wilks said. I love to get out in the snow because I’m a cold weather person, and I said, I wanted a good meal around lunch time, and I’ve eaten here before so I decided to drove over here to Mama Jo’s to get an excellent meal.”

Mama Jo’s is one of the few restaurants that remained open throughout the day.

Workers said staying open on a cold day, makes their food a hot buy.

“I think it’s a good idea, because most of the businesses are closed and I try to do something different here at Mama Jo’s,” manager Jo Brassell said.

Brassell said the snow doesn’t stop customers from having an appetite.

“I’ve had several people tell me today, thank you for being open today,” she said.  “Folks don’t have to cook, the ones that like to come out in the snow can come out to Mama Jo and enjoy a good hot meal.”

Brassell said she has been in business for 8 years and snow has never affected her business.
