TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The May 12th special election to fill the vacant Mississippi First District Congressional seat is just around the corner.
And Monday night a packed house filed into Tupelo’s Link Center for a Debate. 13-candidates are running to determine who will fill seat left vacant by the death of Alan Nunnellee. 11-of the 13 took part in the debate and each had to make the most of their time in front of the audience, responding to questions about the economy, Obamacare, national defense, and social issues. We asked several of those in attendance how difficult it will be to pick from so many candidates.
“Yeah I mean that’s why I’m here, ” said Doug Stewart of Tupelo. “I want to see them face to face. I want to see how they react to live questions to a live audience. Can they handle pressure?”
“I’m going to have trouble.” said Tupelo’s Monica Smith. “There are so many that are in my top tier and they chance daily so maybe tonight I’ll have a decision. I look forward to hearing their answers, ”
All but one of the candidates running are Republicans and the top two finishers in the May 12 election will face off in a runoff. There was a depth of experience in the field including attorneys, medical professionals, and business owners. A number of the challengers took the opportunity to plug their military experience.
