Parents Gear Up For Big Sales Weekend

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-Kids grow up so fast, that’s why parents who plan to replace last year’s school uniforms with longer hems and shirt tales look for savings.

Families are looking for the best deals with Mississippi’s tax free weekend, which is right around the corner.

“Tax Free Weekend of course is always a big draw,” J.C. Penney General Manager Victoria Aurigemma said.

For one weekend before school begins, Mississippi retailers can offer clothing, shoes and other items to customers – all tax free.

“With back to school starting a little earlier this year and tax free being the weekend before, I’m expecting us to be very very busy,” Aurigemma said.

JCPenney will include school uniforms in their Tax Free Weekend. Most schools require students to wear school colors with collared shirts, both long and short sleeved and different styles of pants.

“We have everything that you’re looking for, for back to school. We’re a one stop shop,” she said.

Clothing items priced under $100 are tax free. But in Mississippi, the school supplies such as backpacks are not.

“Yea, I think that’s crazy because how can they expect us to save money if they’re not taking money off of all the school stuff,” J.C. Penney customer Shemekia McIntosh said.

While parents may be upset with the decision, Aurigemma has a solution to their problem.

“We do have a coupon for ten dollars off of a 25 dollar purchase so that could help with savings from backpacks,” she said.

Check for special hours at local merchants. J. C. Penney’s plans extended hours for the weekend.
