Video: Columbus Police ID Suspects in Tuesday Shooting

COLUMBUS, Miss. (Press Release) — On Tuesday, October 28th, 2014 at approximately 1400hrs, a Columbus Police Officer stopped a vehicle at the corner of 18th Street North and 6th Avenue for making an improper turn. While conducting the traffic stop, the officer heard a gunshot in close proximity to his location and determined that he was being fired upon. The officer immediately released the driver from the stop for his safety.

The suspect was identified as a black male wearing a black shirt and blue jeans fired a shot and fled the area on foot. No motive for the shooting was determined and the suspect was not being detained by officers. Information was reported by numerous citizens that the suspect ran across 10th Avenue, crossing 11th Avenue, and ran into a light blue house at the corner of Ash Street. Several of the residents identified the fleeing suspect as “DJ”. His name was later identified as Isham David Conner Jr. 26yoa from Brookville. An attempt was made to have Conner surrender to officers, but was unsuccessful. Law enforcement officers from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and Columbus Police Department worked together to determine the best course of action to reduce any injuries on either officers or suspects. Officers successfully extracted the occupants of the house and both are being charged as follows:

Charged with:  Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon

Two guns — arifle and shotgun — ere recovered from the house located at 1100 Ash Street. The suspected firearm — a handgun — used in the assault was recovered this morning after a secondary search of the area of the shooting.

Isham David Conner Jr.’s bond was set at $10,000 for Possession of Weapon by a Felon and $100,000 for Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer

Conner’s address was also listed as 300 South Lehmberg Road in Columbus during the arraignment.

Cheyanne Smith’s bond was set at $10,000 for Possession of Weapon by a Felon.

The Columbus Police Department wants to thank the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office for their overwhelming support and assistance during this investigation.
