Police: Man Arrested for Stabbing Police Officer

HAMILTON, Ala. (WCBI) — A man is behind bars, accused of stabbing a Hamilton, Alabama police officer.

Chief Ronnie Vickery says they’re charging Tarance Edwards with two counts of attempted murder.

He tells WCBI it happened around 9 p.m. Friday night, while Officer Eric Zills was doing a watch at the intersection of National Guard Road and Aggie Avenue.

Vickery says Officer Zills saw Edwards toss something into the bushes nearby, and got out of his patrol car to investigate.

That’s when investigators say Edwards attacked the officer – cutting and stabbing him in the arm and back of the head.

Vickery says volunteer fireman Devon Hall was nearby and saw the attack, and jumped in to help.

Hall was cut on the shoulder, but has since been released from a Hamilton hospital.

Zills is at a Tupelo hospital, and is recovering well.

Chief Vickery says Edwards could face more charges.
