Pontotoc County’s Newly Elected Officials
PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI)-It was a packed out crowd at the courthouse in Pontotoc as the community came out to welcome its newly elected officials.
“You spend a lot of time going door to door working during a campaign, you meet a lot of people and it’s very humbling to see that many people care about their count and care about the people they’ve elected to come here and support you,” chancery clerk Ricky Ferguson said.
The community welcomed 19 newly elected officials.
And of those elected, 9 of them are entering their first term, including Ferguson.
Ferguson said it was always his life long dream of becoming a chancery clerk.
“When I was in high school at South Pontotoc, I was on the student council, and the student council voted to go before the board of supervisors to ask for speed bumps for the school,” Ferguson said. “At that time, the current chancery clerk kinda tapped on the desk and he said, ‘I think we can do that’, and they all looked at him and agreed I knew who the chancery clerk was but i didn’t know what he did at that times, but I said, I want to be that man some day.”
And that dream finally came to fruition for Ferguson on Sunday.
“I wanna bring a positive attitude we want to get out there and determine exactly what it is that we need and set priorities so that we an get things done,” he said.
Also starting their first term is the newly elected constable for the east side, Tommy Corbin.
Corbin comes from a law enforcement background in narcotics.
“It’s a big difference because now I’m on the top side, I’ve always don’t the other kind of law enforcement, running up and down the road, nobody ever sees me working narcotics, and stuff, now I’m gonna be in the public eye,” Corbin said.
But Corbin said he can handle making the transition, and he’s eager to begin his new role in the community.
“I’m gone bring professionalism and respect and do the best U can as far as doing the job, serving the papers, working the courts, making people feel comfortable in the courtroom, and if they have any questions I’ll be able to answer them and make them feel comfortable,” Corbin said.
