STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-There is a new drug targeted towards young teens and adults. A particularly potent form of ecstasy is popping up on high school and college campuses

If that’s news to you, you are not alone. The name is molly. It’s street name is short for the word molecule. It has become a popular drug in college towns like Oxford and in Memphis.

We talked to some students at Mississippi State University about how much they knew about molly’s. Here’s what they said.

Have you heard about the drug Molly?

“I have not, sounds like a safer version of something that will kill you,” says Jonathan Frye.

“Yes, learning it from classes sociology classes, psychology classes, random students,” says Merritt Lafoe.

“Yes, a friend of mine she was exposed to it unwillingly and it really messed her up,” says Kcrieva Walker.

A Molly is very pure form of the classic party drug “ecstasy”. For the people who take them, Mollys can lead to a feeling of euphoria.

We spoke with A narcotics agent from the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s departmet.

“It’s slang form basically. Given for the powder crystallization form of MDMA the drug,” says Narcotics Agent.

Molly has become a popular topic among rap artists like Nicki Minaj and Kayne West. Even Madonna has mentioned them.

“Culture now is kind of making a bit more accessible to learning about these new types of drugs and activities,” says Lafoe.

“Do I think its around here? Yes, but I haven’t been around it myself personally. I know its gotten really big because its been in a lot of songs that people dance to,” says Walker.

Some users mistakenly believe Mollys are harmless, but that’s not the only thing that makes them appealing.

“I believe it’s the highest level of purity rather than pills, you can get higher I believe quicker,” says Agent.

“No drug is safe. You never know what it can do to you and you don’t know the symptoms of it. It’s like something that is new and hot and it’s on the market and you just take it because you hear or you are under peer pressure or under the influence that everything is going to be okay and it’s really not,” says Walker.

The drug affects the central nervous system. Side effects can include an increase body temperature, dehydration, brain damage and even death.

In the state of Mississippi if you are found in possesion with the drug you can get one to 30 years in prison and for selling the drug you can get 30 years or more.
