Former MSU President and University of Alabama Chancellor Dr. Malcolm Portera will work with East Mississippi Community College and MSU work force staffs to develop training for Yokohama Tire as it prepares to build a commercial truck and bus tire plant in Clay County.

They also will enhance programs for existing and potential future industries to insure the region’s workers are prepared for hundreds of potential jobs on the horizon.

Portera is a West Point native who was president of MSU from 1998 to 2001 and then headed the Alabama system for 10 years before retiring last year.

He’s been involved with the recruitment of Nissan, Mercedes and Hyundai in Mississippi and Alabama.

Although he’s already involved in preliminary discussions, he doesn’t officially start work until June 1.
