COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Christmas has come and gone, and now it is time to ring in the New Year. As we plan for our parties, we also need to make plans for our pets.

For most, it is a tradition to bring in the New Year with a bang.

Jason Nickels says, “everybody likes shooting fireworks and that can be really really troublesome for your pets.”

That is right! The loud noises startle pets, putting them in a panic mode. They may even seek safety outside of your yard, leading them to be lost.

Every year at this time, volunteers at the Humane Society see an increase in missing pets. But there are several things you can do to prepare your pets for the upcoming holiday.

Nickles goes on to say, “make sure they have proper Id on his tag and all the information is up to date. You can also have them micro-chiped.”

Proper identification is key, and should always be kept current.

Now, it may be tempting to leave your pet outdoors as normal, but doing so increases the risk of pets escaping.

Veterinarian  Daniel Shy suggest, “if they are in a situation where they are in a fenced yard you may want to bring them inside and put them in a kennel. ”

If bringing your pet indoors is possible, it is best to make them feel comfortable. Allow them to stay in a safe room, away from guest. Even if your animal doesn’t normally lash out at people, the stress of the situation may lead them to.

If your pet has a history of jitters from loud noises, like thunder, you may want to consult your vet.

For extreme cases, Shy reminds you that, “there are some medications for anxiety that you can put them on.”

Now, If your pet does run and hide.

“Contacting your shelters in your neighborhood and just looking around. Always make a report with us and you can call animal control and make a report with them,” are ways to recover your pet,  says Nickles.

Many Facebook groups, like Pets-Lost & Found Columbus, have lead countless pets back to their fur-ever homes.
