TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Anyone who uses the Natchez Trace Parkway had a chance to voice their ideas on how to help make the federal roadway safer.

The National Park Service hosted a Share the Road event in Tupelo this afternoon. It was an opportunity for motorists, bicyclists, hikers and others to talk about a number of topics involving safety concerns along the 444 mile parkway.

Organizers say there were several fatalities earlier this year, and input is needed to ensure everyone’s safety.

“Surprisingly, the fatalities of bicyclists have been in rural areas, so that has stimulated conversation and talk, and we ended up with these partners who wanted to work with us to try and see how we can improve safety for everyone,” Natchez Trace Parkway Superintendent Mary Risser said.

There will be similar events held in cities along the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Information gathered at the discussions will be reviewed to help implement additional safety precautions and policies.
